Packing a self storage unit takes a bit of planning and skill. The goal is to use all of the space in the most efficient way, while still maintaining some access to your items in case you need them while they’re in storage. Here are a few tips to keep in mind as you begin to pack your storage unit.
· Pack tallest to shortest. The tallest and largest items like furniture and mattresses should be closest to the back walls. Starting with the tallest items in the back and the shorter items in front, this will give you a clear view of what's inside your unit at first glance and help you use the space in the most efficient manner.
· Place items on pallets or blocks of wood. Concrete sweats. You will be much happier if your stored goods are off the concrete.
· Cover your stored items. The doors do not seal out the dust. Cover your items to keep them cleaner.
· Take Inventory. As you pack up your items, make a list of exactly what you are placing in the storage unit. This will help you recall what's inside the unit and incase you need to file an insurance claim.
· Insure your stored goods. It is best if you have insurance on your stored items as Cameron Storage, LLC’s insurance does not cover your stored goods.
· Use a good lock. A disc or cylinder lock are the most secure locks currently available. It is worth the extra money to use a good lock. We can provide you with a quality disc lock for $10.00. You may choose to use your own lock to secure your stored items.
· Keep the snow cleared. You are responsible to keep the snow/ice cleared in the area within 3 feet of the front of your unit.
· Do not store food. Storing food in a storage unit is never a good plan. Give your food to your friends/relatives or donate it to a food pantry.
· Stack with care. Stack heavy things on the bottom progressively getting lighter towards the top.
· Use space well. Fill empty things (dresser drawers, washer/dryer etc.) with small items to maximize the space you have available.
· Pack well. When packing delicate/fragile items, pack them in bubble wrap, newspaper, towels, etc. to ensure that they will not be damaged.
· Drive safely. Many people will be driving over sized vehicles (moving van etc.) and/or pulling a trailer. Please remember that these types of vehicles need to make wide turns. Please plan enough space, drive slowly and watch your mirrors to avoid hitting cars and other objects. Please make sure that you are paying attention to the height of your vehicle in relation to your surroundings! Please remain on the driveways at all times.
